Seismic monitor: the whole world

• ×Run outside while it is shaking. Glass and cladding fall by the exit, and strong shaking makes a running person fall.
• ×Stand in a doorway. In a modern building it is no stronger than the wall, and the door itself swings hard.
• ×Use the lift or step onto a balcony — neither during the shaking nor right after it.
• ×Strike a match or a lighter, or flip switches afterwards: there may be a gas leak.
• ×Tie up the phone network without need — the lines are needed by rescuers.
• ×Rely on the “triangle of life”. Official agencies do not recommend it; the tested instruction is drop, cover, hold on.
• ×Jump from a window or a balcony. AFAD warns about this separately: fractures from such jumps are among the most common injuries.
• ×Go back into a damaged building for your things before it has been inspected: after the first shock the structure holds worse, and an aftershock finishes it.
• ×Believe earthquake “forecasts” and messenger rumours. The time and place cannot be predicted; only AFAD and official channels are reliable.
