Earthquake insurance

Turkey has a compulsory policy for homes and a voluntary insurance on top of it. In short: what they are and how to get them.

Compulsory

DASK

State earthquake insurance for homes. Its presence is checked for mortgages and property transactions (tapu), and when electricity and water are connected.

Covers

  • • direct damage to the building from an earthquake and the fire, explosion, tsunami and landslide it causes, including partial damage
  • • a cash payout up to the policy limit

Does not cover

  • • belongings, furniture and any other property
  • • damage above the policy limit
  • • temporary housing costs and lost rental income
  • • debris removal
  • • injury and death

The limit depends on the size and type of the building and is indexed every month. The current amount is on the DASK website.

What DASK does not cover

Village houses, wholly commercial or industrial buildings, buildings without a project or built in breach of regulations, and unsafe buildings ordered to be demolished. Voluntary earthquake insurance may be available for them.

Voluntary

Supplementary insurance

A private insurer's policy. If your home is worth more than the DASK limit, the excess can be insured here; you can also insure belongings and temporary housing costs. Terms differ by company.

How to get it

  1. 1

Check whether you have a policy

On the DASK website, in the “Poliçe Sorgulama” section: by ID number and policy number, by ID and district, or by address code.

  2. 2

    Take out or renew DASK

A policy lasts one year. You can buy it from an insurance agent or at a bank branch. Renewing every year earns a discount.

  3. 3

Decide whether you need extra cover

Compare the amount above the DASK limit with the value of your home and belongings, and ask the insurer for its terms.
